JANUARY CHALLENGE--31 SMALL STONE POEMS!

Well, as January ends, I am glad to say that I completed the poetry challenge from A River of Stones.

Wrote some small stone poems, one for each day.

Took many photos to capture what inspired the poem.

My last one is inspired by a couple of cardinals that I saw in our shrubs.

General trends:

Question 1--Survey reveals that a majority of respondents do have a snack while writing.
Question 2--Coffee is preferred but tea & water are popular as well. Other beverages are also enjoyed.
Question 3--fresh fruit was the choice of many.

Friday finish, it is!

Busy week with quite a bit happening in the writing sphere.

As January moves along, I am continuing to write small stone, poems that capture a small moment in the everyday--just my cup of tea.

Today, this morning was an absolute winter wonderland, enabling me to continue with some poems from the deck perspective and views from our main floor window that overlooks the back yard.

I took some photos from the deck but I, also, was inspired by the view that shone throughout the screen and window pane. Wrote a wee poem for the day. (still the after-effects of Robbie Burns Day)

For lunch today, think it would be appropriate to have a steaming dish of oatmeal!!!!!

McCann's Oatmeal with added bilingual label!

I prefer the Irish steel cut oats by McCann's but I have just found that they make a quick version now--just place half cup of McCann quick oats in a dish with 1 cup of water--microwave for 1 minute, 30 sec. Voila!

Delicious creamy oatmeal--add a bit of maple syrup for a North American touch, some currants, a spot of milk or cream, too, and you have a delicious helping of fiber for the day!

By the way, this is not a paid ad, I just like this cereal food.

Thought I would post an early poetry vignette for tomorrow.

Cardinal!

For the 21st, this small poem stone was inspired by a red cardinal seen from the deck last week. This solitary bird spent a long time in a nearby pear tree.
I decided to take a picture which I have pasted here. As I do not have a telephoto lens, my cardinal is truly a glimpse of red. I was able to see him with binoculars in all his glory. It may look like he is a dot on the rooftop but, no, he was actually sitting in the tree. Really!

PEACE ON MARTIN LUTHER KING JR DAY!

Reminders! They are a vital part of busy lives.
To help with the ever-quickening pace of life, free calendars were circulated, frequently, when I was a child. Now, print calendars are not given out so generously by businesses. Many are actually designed as works of art. That brings to mind those thick day planning books of the 80s & 90s. For the most part, electronic calendars have replaced the traditional ones.

While the iCal version is great, sometimes I just like to look at the paper version on the wall.

Today, there is a reminder about Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, observed in the U.S. Here, in Ontario,

that reminder seemed to be reinforced by an amazing set of jet tracks in the cold blue January sky, so guess what? I wrote a poem, a small stone!

Much has changed since 1968 but the legacy of MLK, Jr., has stayed its course. His words and speeches are quoted by those seeking justice in many parts of the world, let alone the U.S. and, here, in Canada.

Sometimes its takes a day like this, even an "x" in the sky to remind us of that call to peaceful change.

POETRY PEBBLES FROM THE DECK!

As January reaches the half-way mark, I thought I would share a bit about the poetry challenge in which I have been involved this month.

You might have noticed a small graphic in the sidebar to the right for A River of Stones. This challenge originates on the other side of the Atlantic. Poets are encouraged to write about a single observance each day, a small stone of words, to post them in a small book and to share.
I took up the challenge to write a small stone each day in January 2012.

after receiving an invitation from another poet, Laurie Kolp, who writes amazing words each day!

The challenge has been fun as I do like to write about the everyday small aspects of life, in a book and on the computer. I decided to focus on the perspective that provides much inspiration for my writing--my view from the deck that overlooks our backyard and a view of neighbourhood generously lined with trees. For many of the days, I have taken photos to accompany the small poems.

Here are a couple of photos that I took this month. I wrote two of these poems in response to what I saw on the deck.

UNIVERSAL LETTER WRITING WEEK 2012!

The tradition of designating week/months to special themes is continuing as we ease into 2012.

STATIONERY WITH SEASHELL THEME

I was interested in knowing that Letter Writing is the focus for this week.
Due to some rough currents in the electronic world this week, I am posting a bit late about this special topic but here goes....

When I was in elementary school, even high school, mastering the art of letter formats and styles was part of the curriculum. It was important, vital in fact, to be able to express yourself well in a letter for job pursuits, business contacts, personal communication.

Over those years, I wrote and received many letters from friends and relatives. Thinking back to childhood, I recall the joy of receiving a big batch of letters from my former Grade 2 classmates after we moved far away to a new school district; apprehension as my sister & I awaited official letters of exam results from The Royal Ontario Conservatory of Music; periodic letters to an aunt far away in another province.

It was fun to receive a box of stationery, similar to this one in my photo, as a gift on birthdays. Whatever the colour or decorative scenery on the sheets of paper, I looked forward to writing new epistles to friends or older sisters who had moved away to pursue education and job opportunities. Green or blue paper with matching envelopes--wow!

As teenagers, my friends and I wrote many letters as we experienced the trials and tribulations of first loves, break-ups, misunderstandings, and overall vicissitudes of our high school years.
Teen angst aside, along with the telephone, letters were a great vehicle for sharing our lives in a pre-texting time. For many of us, long distance phone charges meant that letters were more economical, just costing a few cents a stamp!

History is full of famous letters. From the ancient Greeks and Romans to the Bible and more recent centuries, they have served to document the stories of the past--people and events.
Literature has a rich legacy of letter-writing poets and authors. Jane Austen fans abound today, many years after she wrote her first epistolary novel.

A found box of letters is a treasured discovery for many keen spirits in families, research and the newly popularized field of pickers in many locales. For a time, as part of Amnesty International, I wrote letters to people far away in hopes of keeping up a connection. Letter-wrIting has been a means of reaching out to others on so many levels.

Sometimes, I pause to reflect on letters that I have received in the past. A few remain, packed away in a couple of stationery boxes. They are precious voices from days gone by. Like some of the classical writers, these actual letters can take me back to people and places so dear. As I am drawn to these moments both happy and sad, it causes me to ponder about today.
What will be the legacy of the digital age and texting?

DRIED GRASSES ON SNOW CRYSTALS!

Each year brings the chance to start anew. 2012 is almost a week old now and many of us are still mulling over plans for these months to come.

The week has been a re-energizing one after a few weeks of mixing and mingling, shopping, visiting, even exchanging gifts or buying some items with gift cards.

I have some words out this week at a couple of sites. First , honoured to be part of an annual co-operative poem at LeafPress.ca. Also, have a post at Bread 'n Molasses as part of their 12 Days of Christmas--I was Day 10!

For the month of January, I have decided to participate in a poem challenge called A River of Stones. Will see how it goes.

After a big snow storm a few days ago, some of the snow has melted. Great temperature for a walk today! Hope the milder temperatures last for a few days.

Just a quick hello today and best to all my blog followers!!!!

May 2012 truly be a good year for all as it ends with a snowfall and blizzard warning. Tomorrow morning the front yard will be covered with a thick layer of that snow once again.

Best in all you resolve for the year to come! I hope that any listed plans will flourish despite any obstacles like this sturdy rosemary in the herbs of our perennial garden.

As for writing, I will aspire to write more words on a variety of topics.

Even the weather conditions will not deter me from recording some observations here and there as I have recently found some great items for those rainy, damp days when I am walking around the universe. I shared this finding in a post about Writing in the Rain. For American readers, these items are also available in the U.S.

The holidays are ending. Looking forward to some of the new winter reads that I have received.

2012 RESOLUTIONS! WHAT WOULD WOODY GUTHRIE SAY?

Today, I took a few moments to catch up on some blogs that I follow.

One, The Art of the Rural, has a talent for locating and sharing many gems of Americana, rural culture, in particular. Today's post celebrated the talent of Woody Guthrie and shared the fact that 2012 will be the 100th anniversary of his birth.

I have always been a fan of this folk hero for all that he did to speak out for the people who were suffering in the challenging Depression years and other times when the American Dream was not unfolding quite the way that people had hoped.

The site shares a photo of the lengthy hand-written list of New Year's resolutions made by Guthrie in the 1940s. The list is neatly printed on lined paper. What struck me most about it was the simplicity of his words, fundamental aspirations of daily living that he probably acquired through his years of living on the road.

Reading the list gave me pause for thought about the upcoming year.

Then, I wondered to myself, in these times of economic upset and dislocation, what would Woody write for 2012?

HOLIDAYS OR HOLY DAYS--FOOD FOR THOUGHT!

Holidays or Holydays, whatever the reason to celebrate or observe, one theme seems to cross all customs--food!

Each tradition seems to have a wealth of recipes for marking a particular event.

Often, recipes are passed from one generation to another. Each year, in December, I am reminded of this exchange.

When the children were growing up, it was an annual past-time to spend an afternoon making gingerbread cookies of all shapes and sizes. Although I have the faintest memory of a Grandma making these cookies, the recipe is not to be found. The yearning for that taste lingers, however, and our favourite recipe came from a little booklet published by Black Creek Pioneer Village.
One more family favourite cookie is shortbread, a version similar to this one in my late Mother's recipe files.

FAVOURITE COOKIES!

Other traditions, in my family, included the making of Christmas Cake, the much-maligned fruit variety, and Carrot Pudding, a steamed dessert topped with delicious caramel sauce. The former was an annual custom my Mother dutifully observed to the delight of half the family of ten.

Although we were not all keen on the traditional fruitcake, the carrot pudding was a winner with all of us, both children and parents. My Aunt Margaret had even perfected the recipe to cook it in a pressure cooker; alas, despite the time-consuming preparation, I recall devouring a pudding, quickly, with my cousins, on one of the Christmas holiday visits.
Ironically, these dishes have not passed on to the next generation-- my children or nieces & nephews. To my family, I have given a poem of Christmas Cake, rather than the dessert itself!

The new generation in our family has a mix of food customs in their repertoire. I have mentioned some of mine, already.
From their Dad's traditions, they have a taste for many dishes: Chicken soup with matzo, Montreal smoked meat sandwiches, smoked salmon, cream cheese & bagels are some of the favourites. Potato latkes are part of their food celebrations.

RECIPE FOR LATKES!

Each of us has learned to make new dishes. One of the best latke recipes that I have found is almost 20 years old. Cut from the pages of a Canadian Living issue, it is literally, falling out of my recipe scrapbook. I thought I would scan it to post here.

The sharing of food traditions, for centuries, has been a link for cultures, families, even countries. Our family has benefited from that sharing of our own traditions, plus many more from the community in which we live, everything from Oktoberfest ale and sausage to dishes from across the globe.

Whatever traditions you celebrate, may you enjoy the food legacy that is such a great part of the holiday or holy day!

LIGHTS--CELEBRATE!

There is much to celebrate in December.
For me, it is always a hopeful sign to reach that Winter Solstice & to know that the hours of sunlight will increase, minutes at a time!
During these cold days, the lights that shine in our community are like beacons of hope as we face the challenges of winter.
This week, in many homes around the world, candles will be lit in observation of Hanukkah. Just to brighten up the day, I made a small word picture here to celebrate this Festival of Lights. Delicious potato latkes will be the focus of many a dinner. Best All!

JOHN LENNON & CHARLIE BROWN

CHARLIE BROWN, JOHN LENNON'S IMAGINE

In December, each year, a few alterations are made as decorations are unpacked for celebrating the season.

This year, John Lennon's legacy word "Imagine" and Charlie Brown's look-alike are sitting on the fireplace mantel in the family room.

This gives me pause, to think, "perchance to dream" in the words of Shakespeare.

What could these two characters, possibly, have in common?

They differ in many ways:

Lennon an actual man, Charlie Brown, a cartoon strip character;
one was born in 1940, the other appeared in 1950;
one was English, the other American.

With all these differences, did they, in fact share any qualities or characteristics?

Both were: articulate in a "simple" forthright way; casually, fashion conscious; surrounded by music.

Interestingly, this real man and a comic strip character boy, have impacted people, world wide, with their common aspiration of peace--one in his music, one in a story for Christmas. Just imagine!

WINTER WORDS & FORESTS

Well, it has been a wonderful, word-week, I have to say!

With a poem or two published,

MY POEM & BOOK COVER PHOTO!

especially the ones at CommuterLit, it offsets the chapbook rejection
from earlier in the month.

Last evening, there was a book launch of the anthology I mentioned in my last post. It was great to reconnect with my writing group and to hear some readings in an informal pub setting. A good time was had by all.

Working on some gift finding & wrapping. Hope to finish making a few items in the near future &, maybe, catch a movie on the weekend.

A light layer of snow is covering the ground but it is much better than last year when winter started in November.

One last little note...
Today a letter arrived in the mail
with an amazing stamp designed
to celebrate the 2011
International Year of Forests.
Trees are such a vital part
of our whole eco-system & this stamp is a perfect tribute
to this special year.

DECEMBER CARDINAL BRIGHTENS DOLDRUMS!

2011 DECEMBER CARDINAL

December days, so far, have been a bit dreary in the weather department.

However, today, there was a bright spot in the tree branches in the backyard.

A female cardinal was perched in the red shrubbery, long enough for me

to catch a photo, included here.

Not sure what it is about cardinals, but they pique my interest--they are

such eye-catchers, it seems.

I have some Poetry updates for this post.

Just received a new issue from The Ontario Poetry Society in which I have a small poem called Lockdowns. The theme was work-related and there are many perspectives in the poetry of this issue. Also, I learned about the new Facebook group for this poetry organization.

Later this week, at a local dining spot, some of us are gathering to celebrate a book launch of & that will be a fun night for all. There will be a variety of writings in the book, a combination of prose & poetry, including my poem, Girls and Green Apples.

BOOK LAUNCH

Also, 3 of my poems are scheduled for online publication at CommuterLit, a fairly new site that publishes work early each day.

Working on compiling some poems into a chapbook format & will see in the new year about focusing on that project.

Seasonal celebrations have started. The tree is decorated along with a few outdoor lights. Just watched the movie, It's a Wonderful Life.

Thanksgiving!

Seems to be in the air these days.

The celebration of this event occurs this week in the U.S.

2011 Last red rose of autumn!

And a very Happy Thanksgiving to all of our Neighbours!

We have already celebrated Thanksgiving in Canada but it seems to me that autumn brings a special awareness of so much for which to be thankful.

In writing, I just received some good news that an anthology in which I have a poem has gone to print. The book launch is in December!

So many family reasons to give thanks, as well! This has been a wonderful year with many blessings!

As the year ends, I have also posted an item in my other blog that you might want to check out if you are in a craft-making frame of mind: UPCYCLE CALENDARS & BROCHURES!

It is an environmentally friendly suggestion for reusing some of the paper items that get tossed at this time of year. Making your own greeting cards, small books, framed pictures can be a fun way to pass the time. At this time of year, Name books are one of my favourite items to make for giving. Bookmaking, in general, has become a craft of choice, a great way to upcycle so many materials.

Finally, for this blog writer, I would like to give thanks to all who read my posts at this spot.

For a writer, a reading audience is a vital part of the process.

As a year goes by, there are many special holidays and anniversaries, even monthly themes, such as Movember.

This month, some of my peers are writing novels in the NaNoWriMo;
others are in the midst of an annual Poetry writing challenge

at Poetic Asides.

2011 AUTUMN COLOURS!

Along with these events, I have just learned that November, also, is designated as Family Stories Month!

This is a time to focus and celebrate family, stories and traditions, to even

start to make a few new family observances.
One site has several suggestions

for celebrating Family History Month.

Ironically, last week, I just received copies of a special book about our family history, researched, written and compiled by one of my sisters and her husband.
Put together by a talented graphic designer, in our many-cousined family, it is a wonderful collection of information, anecdotes and photos.

Thanks go out to them for all of the hours and miles they spent on this book. Have to say, I am thrilled that two of my poems about our family were included: Christmas Cake and
Summer Night on the Farm.

November days might be bleak in the weather department but
they certainly are bright in celebrations and observances.

VETERANS' WEEK 2011--MENIN GATE

November has arrived and, with it, Veterans' Week.

Thought I would share a few thoughts and links as an acknowledgement of deeds done and thanks for the chance to live in a free democratic country, sharing a border with another country so blessed. A look at history suggests that it, easily, could have been otherwise. Our British cousins know only too well.

This realization came home to me, a few years ago, when I visited the sites of European battlefields of WWI and WWII in which Canadian soldiers fought.

I have many photos and memories of this trip but one of the key
moments took place at a site that was new to me--the Menin Gate in Belgium. This gateway was captured by the renowned British war poet, Siegfried Sassoon.

My group of Canadian and American educators, mostly History teachers, attended a twilight ceremony that has occurred daily since the 1920s.
For approximately half an hour, the town of Ypres grows quiet as people gather at the Menin Gate to hear the Last Post being played and to see the laying of wreaths at this memorial site. It is a tribute, by the Belgium people, for the sacrifices made to sustain their freedom.
Under a concrete arch of thousands of imprinted soldiers' names, a member of our group laid a wreath beside another one from a visiting Scout group from Australia.
Observing the two-minute silence never spoke louder to all who attended that night. The Last Post was more haunting than ever.

BY THE WATERS OF BAYFIELD!

Lake Huron was glimmering in the sunlight on Sunday!

Have to admit that my views of this Great Lake

have mostly been limited to the months of July and August.

In October the lake takes on a new appearance, let alone temperature. The sound of the waves is more urgent as they rush into the shore, scattering pieces of driftwood and fine stones along the way.

While our family walked along the shore of Lake Huron at the small village of Bayfield, I saw a geometric collage in the juxtaposition of land and water as we headed towards the pier. There was a kind of beauty in the placement of the elements as I savoured the sound of the water washing in to shore, then receding, only to return seconds later. To me, the sound of the waves is almost hypnotic.

Whatever the season, at Ontario's West Coast, Lake Huron continues to

inspire!

Similarly, the colours of autumn leaves are a visual treat. The panorama has peaked, however, as many of the red and yellow leaves have fallen in our recent wet and windy weather.

A couple of years ago, after a walk in the fall, I wrote a small poem entitled "Autumn Happens".

This year, I took a photo of a leaf that landed on our car. I have combined the two works in a jpeg file for my author card below.

I shared this poem in a reading at a site called virtualpoetryreading.com 2.0, organized by a poet named Buddah. As I phoned in the reading, this was a nervous first for me although some of the poets in my group have contributed their voices before.

APPLE SEASON!

Apples, apples, everywhere! It is Apple Month in many regions!

Apples have been an integral part of local produce throughout my life, and for much of the lifetime of this country, Canada.

We lay claim to the McIntosh apple but there are many varieties available in orchards in this province of Ontario and other parts of the Canadian landscape.

From childhood to the formative years of my own children, apples have been a favourite!

As a child, the scent of cinnamon was a frequent welcome home to all after a long day at school or work. Homemade applesauce, apple pie or apple crisp were some of those comfort foods when I was growing up on the farm in Garafraxa, Dufferin County. They became traditions in our young urban family, too.
Cinnamon is still my favourite spice!

Apples have worked their way into stories and poems, photos and holiday trips.

I have caught some of my earliest memories of eating green apples in a poem that will soon be included
in an upcoming anthology while another one of my poems on apple picking was published a couple of years ago.

In a family of 8 children, I am sure that apples were a very tasty but economical dessert source. I recall that my parents would make an annual fall trip to the Holland Marsh to pick up winter supplies of apples, cabbages and potatoes.

After the bushels of Spy apples were parked in the basement to stay cool, I looked forward to sampling one of these delicious fruits later in the kitchen. Of course, it would only be eaten after my Dad shined up one of the biggest Northern spy apples, then broke it in half by hand. We children were awe-struck by such strength!

2011 THANKSGIVING

This last week was a bit of a whirlwind, everything from a baby shower to an election.

These days were also marked by passages of people and changing landscapes as Fall makes it stamp on the year.

Mums--renewed after long winter!

Of the celebrity sort, Steve Jobs died following a long spell with ill health. Tributes poured in along with overall recognition of the impact he made on individuals and information technology.
Interestingly enough, his journey began long ago as one person, S. Gaylord, wrote in her blog .

Within one week we were celebrating the upcoming birth of a child. Later, we were expressing condolences on hearing of a loss.

It does give one pause on Thanksgiving for lives around us and lives lived.

On a reflective note, I just read a blog post about
recipes at The Unwritten History Told in Recipes .

Celebrating Thanksgiving in Canada at mid-October, or in the United States at November's end, recipes and traditions play an integral part. I thought about that as I read the recipe post.

Ontario Election Week!

A bit of this & that...

Well, it's that time again--time to vote, that is in Ontario.

The campaigns are winding down. Who will win? Anybody's guess. Whatever you decide, make sure to vote!

It is one of those typical fall weekends with the wind gusting, leaves scattering to all directions. On these days, despite controversy, I realize how much wind power there is to harness!

Trimmed back some of the roses and put away some of the container garden.

Overall, the gardens provided a lot of colour and some produce, too. The herbs added a lot of taste to various dishes and the cherry tomatoes were delicious. I am debating whether or not to grow some herbs indoors. In the past, it has not been too successful.

Time for some new colours indoors. Some lighter shades will brighten up
the living/dining rooms.

It is funny how light makes such a difference as we head into the shorter hours of daylight.

NATIONAL COFFEE DAY?

Blossoms of Autumn!

Yesterday, I made a big discovery--National Coffee Day!

September 29, today, is National Coffee Day!

There are so many designations for months, weeks and days, now, but coffee? That was a new one for me. It gave me pause for thought as I recalled the origins of coffee in my life.

I grew up in a tea drinking household. It was a staple for our family. Running out of tea was tantamount to an emergency. We tried, never, to let it happen.

Unlike most of my peers & childhood friends, I was allowed to drink tea from a very young age, 5 or 6 years old. This may not have been a shock in countries such as England or that of my Irish ancestors; however, to my North American milk-drinking cohort, it was a custom that I rarely divulged!

Growing up in rural southwestern Ontario, tea tastes were limited to what was available on the shelves in small town grocery stores. The most common labels for these orange pekoe varieties included: Salada; Red Rose (Available only in Canada, you say? What a pity!); and, eventually, Tetley Tea.

Tea Time was part of our every day life. It seemed to me that the kettle was always ready and waiting to make a new pot of tea. Of course, living on a dairy farm, milk was readily available to add to our cups of tea.

This beverage was not only refreshing in summer, warming in winter; it brought some free items for children into our home. Over the years, these freebies included a wondrous variety:

ceramic figures of animals--these are now collectibles!
sticker cards of trees and animals and birds;
provincial emblem crests to celebrate Centennial Year in 1967.

Eventually, when my older sisters brought home their beaux, coffee was added to our grocery shelves, never to leave. The coffee percolator stood side by side with the kettle on the kitchen stove.

By the time I was in my final year of university at Guelph, with extensive research papers and seminars and due dates, I started to buy the odd cup of coffee from one of the ever-present coffee machines. Though I shudder at the thought now, I think that triple sugars and creams were the order of the day, for those instantly brewed paper cups.

Later, in grad school, I lost the taste for all that sugar and cream; milk was the preferred addition to a mug of coffee, sometimes even a bit of Bailey's. I, also, added a few more flavours to the tea that I still enjoyed: Earl Grey, Irish & English breakfast teas, and Darjeeling, for a bit of a change.

By the way, I happened to marry a man from Montreal with a strong coffee preference but an appreciation for teas of many flavours, even iced tea. It has been a happy marriage!:)

2011 NATIONAL FOREST WEEK, TREE DAY!

This is National Forest Week!

Canada has designated Wednesday, September 21,

as National Tree Day.

I grew up in a rural setting with our farm land being blessed

with a woodlot of trees.

Near the house, we had a variety of maple, apple and fir trees.

Throughout the seasons, trees provided shade, heat and shelter.

This past weekend, I marvelled at the numerous, towering black walnut trees near the shores of Lake Huron.

In the 19th century, this presence of black walnut trees drew early settlers to Ontario's West Coast vicinity. These trees were a sign of arable soil to pioneers who were moving into the last areas of southwestern Ontario to be settled.

Many of these trees remain, a rich part of our natural environment.

I picked up a couple of walnut shells & gave them to my daughter and her husband to plant in the yard at their new home. Hopefully, they will take root in their new location.

What a great week to celebrate trees!

Slanted sheets of rain are pointed in the right direction,
enabling me to leave open the window.
The sounds of rain, wind, even the occasional car,
create a backdrop for this day and some moments of reflection.

Big weekend for being a parent!
It started with the small "destination" wedding of our eldest in a little village on the shore of Lake Huron. In a green garden setting, shaded by huge black walnut trees, two young people made their wedding vows.

The weekend finished with the youngest member of our family moving out to relocate closer to the city of his work.

Both are happy events but at the same time they are those milestone minutes along life's pathway.

Think I will just take the rest of the day to mull over these times.

Last big weekend of summer before school
in Canada. Thanks to all who made the summer
so great!

CORN SO SWEET!

Harvest of gardens and field crops is underway.
Corn, one of my favourites, is an item that takes
a lot of effort to plant and harvest for markets.
Thanks to all who bring this to local venues!

In the 21st century, the whole concept of labour is undergoing change.
Workers of all political stripes are experiencing change.
Downsizing, reorganizing and overall structural alterations are taking a toll on many who are trying to get started in a career
or those who are not yet ready to retire.

Uncertainty of work, job conditions and hours,
have long been concerns.
In Canada, discontent erupted into protest long ago.

With rain in the forecast, you might even want to check out a new feature film, The Help.
Yes, working conditions have changed for many, along with societal attitudes, but some of these changes took way too long to occur!

LEGACIES? HOLIDAY READS?

Thankfully, that stormy week has come to a close!

On this Monday, there are some left-over thoughts. Seemed like a good time for an exchange of thoughts.

Hurricane legacies of the past are well known, Katrina, for example. Overall, Irene's impact was less damaging than it could have been. This week will be a time for repairs and review of responses. Many measures were taken ahead of the storm. Was it well organized? Seemed to be.

Half-way through last week, I discovered that it was designated as Legacy Week. In Canada, with the loss of Jack Layton, it was well timed. He has left quite a legacy for many Canadians. The designation started me thinking about things. Legacy always seems to be a topic for politicians and big-name celebrities. What do you think?

Among writers, there is a lot of discussion going on about writing & reading, everything from the revival of short stories and novellas to to President Obama's holiday reads.

It seems that the electronic publishing world is contributing to a revival of the shorter story formats. With instant gratification and communication being the order of the day, fewer people are choosing to read lengthy tomes. For you, is this short story genre a preferred type of story-telling or do you still settle down with War and Peace?

Holiday reads for the President or the Prime Minister--some people questioned the choice of fiction for a holiday read. Are world leaders allowed to read a fiction story or two on their holidays? What is your opinion?

A Book for Jack Layton--Orange & Green Orange et vert

This has been a stormy week.
It started out with some sad news on Sunday.

Jack Layton, died on August 21, 2011.

Leader of the Opposition since the New Democrats made inroads in the last federal election in Canada, Layton died at the age of 61 with cancer being the precipitate of his death.

Jack and his wife, Member of Parliament, Olivia Chow, had just gotten settled into Stornoway, the house reserved for the residing Opposition leader.

That residency was short-lived when cancer recurred.

Although Jack Layton will not be sitting in the Opposition Leader’s chair, when Parliament resumes, his presence will most definitely linger in the House of Commons.

Jack Layton, also, left his mark on all of us as he reached out with a letter full of encouragement to all Canadians; in fact, most of it could apply to people everywhere.

In the last few days, Jack Layton has been honoured in many ways: news stories, interviews, personal testimonials.. chalk drawings, memorial gatherings.

Thought I would make a small tribute book in his memory. For this purpose, I leafed through some my old binders where I found some bright green paper and orange card stock that I had used, on one side, in the past. The blank sides of paper matching his party's campaign colours, were perfect for upcycling into a little book.

In the bio information presented on the news casts this week, I learned that Jack liked music, played guitar and the accordion. That inspired me to make a small accordion book entitled Orange & Green/Orange et vert.

TORNADO IN GODERICH!

LAKE HURON IN DARK SHADE

Ontario's West Coast has many towns and vacation spots on the shore of Lake Huron. One of the Great Lakes, its beaches and shoreline towns are a great destination for many vacationers. It is also the home shore of many year round residents who enjoy the location for family, work and quality of living.

August 21, 2011 will be remembered as the day that a tornado touched down in the heart of a beautiful, historic town of Goderich Ontario. Located on the shores of Lake Huron, it was known for its picturesque layout and architecture. Today has changed the way that Goderich will be perceived.

Already, emergency aid is in place and more support will be forthcoming as needs are assessed.

What took seconds to inflict damage on Goderich is long gone, leaving townspeople with a lengthy recovery period.

It is a sad reminder to all on how fleeting the moment can truly be!

NEXT GENERATION CELEBRATES! METEORS SHOWER!

This is a bit of this'n that for a Friday finish.

BASIL ON THE DECK!

For starters, I would like to say a "hats off" to the Next Generation!

Family gatherings, those times of celebration, give us a chance to catch up on the latest news, build some new memories to take with us in the days ahead. From childhood onwards, times spent together are memorable days for all.

This summer, it seems that the Next Generation is taking on the challenge of hosting these family events to celebrate engagements, homecomings, reunion, summer's end. It is great to see the 20-,30-somethings welcoming this part of living.

On the writing front, today, I received a copy of the latest issue of Verse Afire; great to see that it contained my little poem, Traffic Signals, a brief comment on the development plans for the Gardiner Expressway in Toronto.

Finally, can't resist a few words about the gardens. After a brown lawn summer, recent rains have added a second life to the great outdoors; yes, lawn mowers are back in business!

Also, in the perennial garden, the flowers are more vibrant than ever, lots of reds and whites and yellow blooms. Hostas are ready to bloom, a bit later than usual, I think.

On the deck, basil and cherry tomatoes have been a tasty contribution from my container garden venture. Yesterday, lemon thyme and rosemary were a welcome addition to freshly steamed green/yellow beans and a rice seafood stir fry.

Well, that's about it for this week.

Hope we see a few lights from the Perseid Meteor showers. Last year, I saw only 2 meteors.

POETIC PETUNIAS!

Petunias have flourished this year!

PETUNIAS--PURPLE AND PINK

Pink and purple blossoms abound in the planter boxes on our deck.
It seems to me that petunias are a practically perfect flower with their low maintenance and huge output.

Perhaps that is why Mother used to plant them each year at the grave sites of her parents and my Dad's parents, also.
Whatever the rationale, they certainly were a summer long bright spot as they bloomed in memory of my grandparents.

I was reminded of this, today, as I removed the finished blossoms to make room for the new growth.

With a family get-together soon, petunias come to mind, both as a memory of gardens at home as well as those times of planting these prolific annuals as a loving, grateful, remembrance. I wrote a poem about one of these times.

PETUNIAS IN THE PINK!

PETUNIAS

When I was eight

I stood and watched

as my Mother

took grey boxes of

pink and purple petunias

out of the trunk

of our 1958 blue Bel Air.

Then we scooped and planted

A prayerful of pretty petunias

For Grandmas Margaret and Katie

And Grandpas John and James.

On the newly planted flowers

we poured holy water and

patted the soil to steady the stems.

With a quick prayer and a sign of the cross

the pilgrimage ended

until I turned nine.

July is winding down, one of the hottest summer months in years.
Unfortunately, August has a similar forecast--really hope the weather people are wrong this time! Maybe we will have some moderate weather--have to wait and see.

On a further weather note, last night's generous rainfall quenched the thirst of many gardens, while refilling the water barrel at the side of our house.

Welcome to blog newcomers!

As I have written before, this "first" day of the week is one for planning, reflecting, and reading. Monday is a day for giving focus to the rest of my week. This has worked well for me.

On the weekend I participated in a blog hop. It was fun and interesting to meet new people with the similar interest of writing. Again, I extend a welcome to those who have joined my blog. It is always great to expand the blogging sphere!

The hot, dry weather is continuing all over central North America, it seems. Despite a few flashes of lightning, no sign of rain.

Tragic events of the weekend in Norway have certainly caused the world to ponder the uncertainty of each day. A wave of sympathy is sent from all directions to the survivors and their families.

Once again, a musical talent who faced many personal issues, it seems, has died. British singer, Amy Winehouse, struggled with a lot of challenges in the midst of her career success. Articles have linked the similarity of her mortality to those of noted musicians of the past, including Janis Joplin. Sad news.

Whatever the location, the media-filled world is there at our fingertips. I have come to a realization that,
on hot days like these, it is probably best to take a break from instant updates on everything.
This summer has certainly been a time to step back from the whirlwind of media.

Summertime--yes, the livin' can be easier if we just take time to smell the roses, weed the garden,
see a movie, go for a swim.
Take it easy, out there!

GOLDEN AGE--WHAT'S YOURS?

Finally got around to seeing Midnight in Paris.
It was one of my summer goals to see this film despite the fact that it was a Woody Allen product.

Pink petunia--reseeded!

He, as you may have gathered, is not one of my favourite film artists but I was willing to give this movie a chance.
It was a good decision.

The movie can be taken at a certain lighter level, for sure; however, when you stop to think about the pursuit of life choices, it definitely provides some food for thought.

Set in Paris, the story revolves around the key character, a writer in search of his great American novel. This leads him to reflect on the glory days of legendary fiction writers of the past--F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, in particular, who spent many wordy days and years in Paris.

As the story unfolds, the present and future intertwine. You will have to check out the film yourself to see how the story goes.

Even though I studied and taught History, I have to say that I was never drawn to a particular era so much that I would prefer to live in that time period. It always seemed to me that the positives were offset by a lot of negatives. Studying the past, made me appreciate the present more, I think. In many aspects, we have come a long way, especially, in the realm of rights for women.

This movie gave glimpses of a couple of earlier times when writers and artists flourished. It was an interesting take on the past.

As for Golden Ages, I think I'll keep working on this one, reseeded petunias and all!

Perennials are thriving!

Well, July is moving on so I thought I would post a few thoughts on the summer.

Today, I made an amazing discovery--a mini fan (4 inches) that plugs into a USB connection to provide a breeze while working at the computer. It is great--cute and a colourful turquoise, too! Just enough air flows by as it quietly churns. In Canada, it is available at Shoppers Drug Mart.

Recently, energy use rates have risen. "Smart" Meters have been placed on houses to measure hydro use--the rates vary according to time of day or night. Most people are trying to adjust to using high energy appliances in the hours that are not most expensive.
Takes a while to get used to the new system. Trying not to use the AC unless the humidity gets bad so fans are a help.

Summer always seems to be a great time for movies--hope to see The Lincoln Lawyer and Midnight in Paris.

Summer reads going well. Finished a book of poems and now I am working on a collection of individuals who are writing about simplicity in living.

July 1 is Canada Day.

For Canadians, it signals an official start of summer.

Families and communities gather for picnics, fun and fireworks.

The long weekend usually marks the first of a few camping expeditions for families as we all try to coordinate holidays with the extra long weekend.

It also ties in with strawberry season
with many a white & red shortcake dessert
to be devoured.

This year the newest royal couple is visiting
our fair land and the nation's capital
is celebrating their arrival now.

In the holiday mode, I will be posting at random times.

SUMMER WONDERS!

WOW was all I could say when I looked out at the sky last evening!

CLOUDS OF JUNE on
JUNE 22, 2011 AT 9:40 PM!

This cloud formation preceded a storm, of course,

but it was beautiful, almost magical, to see.

Unfortunately, the resolution is not as great in a larger version of my photo but this little one gives an idea of the intense cloud structure.

Summer is great for the days of gardens which benefited from the rain last night. Everyday, I am in awe of the garden cycle with green lush growth, bright blossoms, and, potentially, harvested food.

Herbs are ready to go with the foursome of parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme.

Also, my dream garden presence of lavender is expanding each year.

The blossoms are showing in shades of bluish purple, mauve & white. The scent is wafting into the open windows now & I hope it will continue for several weeks.

A few sprigs of lavender in a thin stemmed vase

will be at the centre of our kitchen table everyday.

MUSIC GIANT CLARENCE CLEMONS

Clarence Clemons a huge part of the Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band team has died.
He will be missed by many; for music fans, his skill on the saxophone and his camaraderie on stage have left us with many memories.

GIANT MAPLE!

I first saw a live performance by the group in 1985 on a hot summer day in Toronto.
The place was rocking and everyone was standing & dancing for most of the amazing concert.
I have seen them play 4 or 5 more times (not the 20 or so times of certain people I know:)), but each concert event has been amazing.

Clarence Clemons was a vital part of the dynamic mix as The Boss and his group played and sang music with a passion that energized the crowds.

When I look at this huge maple tree in our yard, I am inspired by its amazing stature in this year dedicated to forests. In music, Clemons had such stature.

Experts say that music and the sciences are integrally related; perhaps, that is why a certain quote has come to my mind when I reflect on the passing of Clarence Clemons.
Isaac Newton attributed his success to those who came before him, literally, riding on "the shoulders of giants." With so much talent concentrated in Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Clarence Clemons and his trusty saxophone were, indeed, giants in the great forest of music.

Thanks to the science of technology, we will be able to enjoy and celebrate that musical sound for years to come!

In one corner, there is a thriving lovage herb

Lake Huron & Ontario's West Coast in ENVIRONMENT WEEK

In this 2011 Environment Week, everything in this area seems to be green, growing and blooming!

The UN has declared this a special year of Forests and that is the focus of Environment Week, too.
Trees add so much to our streetscape and overall community--can't imagine living in a treeless location.
I'm sure deserts have their own beauty but I will be appreciating the treed look this week!

My third poem was accepted by a special anthology for the 2012 anniversary of OVC.

Tomorrow is Grad Day at a local university for our son, who is setting out into the world of journalism & communications, a field that is changing at warp speed, it seems.

It seems fitting to end this Environment Week post with a few glimpses of nature with photos taken at Lake Huron this past weekend.
One of the 5 Great Lakes, Lake Huron is a beautiful part of the precious environment along Ontario's West Coast, hugged by little communities of Bayfield, Port Elgin, Goderich and others.
Winter, admittedly, was a bit harsh for these towns in 2011 but the summer is so redeeming with welcoming waters, balmy beaches and awesome sunsets! If you are looking for a spot to visit this summer, Lake Huron's shores are amazing!

Meanwhile, it sure makes me thankful to see the gardens grow--here are a few pictures from the garden! Enjoy these last days of May--safe journey to all!

ST. LOUIS--THE ARCH!

Just back from a weekend in St. Louis, Missouri--the city of Baseball's Cardinals, The Arch and the riverboats so popularized by Mark Twain.

First time visit to this mid-western city was not a disappointment with the weather cooperating part of the time.

Fortunately, the wedding celebrants had a back-up plan when the weather did not comply with their outdoor wishes.

A good time was had by all even after the event was moved indoors.

There was a real sense of southern hospitality in the places we visited. Some of them included:

THE MIGHTY MISSISSIPPI!

Moonrise Hotel staff were welcoming and responsive to all inquiries amidst their lunar setting;
Blueberry Hill's Duck Room was an ideal pub environment for a guest crowd majorly of the college age;
PI--absolutely delicious, customizable pizza & tasty salads;
Forest Park has a combo setting for the Zoo and Museum plus other attractions;
The Arch--wow!
The Riverboat tours--great way to see the river!

Overall it is a great place to visit.

It's another windy day in May!

Seems like April showers have led to May floods
in some places to the West and the South.

On the writing front, just finished reading and reviewing a Spring Read, a historical fiction/ romance novel. Just sketching out some ideas for May, a little bit late but it will have to do.

Some days it is just nice to sit on the deck and watch the clouds roll by. It is so great to see them change shape as they
sail through the sky. These cumulus clouds were fun to see!

3 THEMES OF MAY!

This week has been one of those weeks when words are at a premium but I am not sure where to direct my thoughts. There are at least 3 themes on my list.

First of all, it is half-way through the 60th annual observance of Mental Health Week in Canada. There are some great resources available at this link posted here, information about the facts of Mental Health, video clips and graphics.
The statistics are clear: everyone at work or home is affected by mental health challenges, individually, through relatives, work,
community. Many of us have experience challenges ourselves or the grief at losing someone, often, very young.
Writing about this has been useful for me; for others, it is helpful to talk about it.
Whatever works best, it will benefit all of us to open our minds to something
that was once kept in silence. The website listed above has information
to dispel stereotypes of the past, to create awareness for now.

Secondly, Huntington's disease, is the focus of a monthly theme. Some of us have heard about this devastating hereditary condition while others, including Woody Guthrie, are affected directly by it. Once the inherited condition takes hold, it is a downhill slide, difficult for the individual, family and friends. One fact I learned this week is that financial assistance from insurance and/or government may not be available due to the nature of this condition. This would only exacerbate the dilemma posed by this debilitating disease.
A local support group is working on that issue plus increasing awareness of Huntington's.
With increased awareness, hopefully, pressure to support these individuals will be forthcoming.

Thirdly, the week is advancing towards Mother's Day, always a special day for remembering and celebrating. Looking forward to it!

MAY DAY 2011!

Clouds have given way to a sunny, slightly breezy day!
Great for the election here in Canada where people have been showing up at the polls in a steady stream.
I had a pleasant walk to the polling station, a few blocks away.

It gave me time to take in the beautiful, peaceful surroundings of our neighbourhood--green lawns, budding trees, yellow daffodils, purple hyacinths, white snow drops and a crocus or two. How grateful I am to be living in a country where I can walk freely to vote for the candidate of my choice without fear or threat.

If you sense a rather pensive mood to my writing today,
you would be correct in your perception.

BLUE SKIES!

Since the late evening, startling, news and speech
by U.S. President Obama,
things have seemed a bit surreal in the world.

In the days to come,
who knows what the response will be.

Ten years ago, the world changed,
on a beautiful blue sky morning. when the terrorist
attacks occurred.
The aftermath of those horrific events is still unfolding in so many ways.

Ironically, today, the blue sky is a constant.

THE GREAT LAKES!

Poetry Month is wrapping up for 2011.

It has been a memorable month of words.
Recently, I submitted the Lake Huron poem

that I shared a couple of weeks ago.

It is now online at Haiku for Huron.

As I thought more about poetry in my life,
I wrote up a brief post about it and submitted it
to WM Parenting Connection.
In my post, I mention some of my earliest memories of poetry along with a couple of suggestions for sharing poetry
as a parent with children. There are many
great resources but I have shared a couple from home.

A Good Play

One of my childhood favourites was a small book of poetry by Robert Louis Stevenson. These photos that I took illustrate the aged copy of Child's Garden of Verse that has been passed through generations. It is a bit worse for the wear, having dwelled among 8 active grandchildren, me, included; however, like its contents, it has stood the test of time.
Two of my favourite poems are highlighted here: The Land of Counterpane and A Good Play.

APRIL--CRUEL OR CAPTIVATING?

APRIL SNOW!

Cruel as the poet says, or not?
This year, April is full of surprises, everything from a multiplicity of tornadoes in the United States to snowstorms in many Canadian provinces.

Yes, in April, the weather might be full of "cruel" twists and turns; however, as the wind blows in all directions, the sun shines longer and plants push through the ground, this month is more captivating than cruel to me, it seems.

There is an urgency in everything from gardens and green grass lawns to political and sports deadlines!

In Canada, election fever is rampant with campaign messages coming at us from all directions. The main message being "Vote!" Every vote counts.

The National Hockey League playoffs are in the midst of the first round of many games as teams work towards winning the Stanley Cup. In this household, Montreal is the top contender.

Closer to home, the beautiful silver maple tree in our back yard
is being trimmed this week; even though there are many good reasons
to downsize this tree, have to say it still hurts to see the branches fall. Fortunately in a few week, when the leaves appear, this tree will still look impressive in its height and formation.
Still one of the best shade trees around!

Buds of spring!

Poetry
has certainly been the focus for this month.

Last weekend, Marianne Paul, a writer in our community held a book launch event for her new poetry book at a branch of the local library. We listened to this talented poet read some of her poems from Above and Below the Waterline, against a video backdrop of photos taken on her various canoe trips and writing retreats. It was a gathering of friends and acquaintances, all with a common interest in poetry and poets.

We had the opportunity to read at an open mic. It was wonderful to hear some very moving poems about people, pets, life followed by a talented songster, Gary Kreller, who shared a musical poem with us as he played his accordion and sang a humorous ballad.

Some draws for books were an added feature, with "guess who" getting lucky! Spring reading time is here!

It has been a great day!
Celebrating poetry is always fun for me! I wrote some words about poetry day & it was posted at
WM Freelance Writers Connection. Check it out if you wish!

For quite a while, I have treasured this little stone retrieved from a walk along the shores of Lake Huron. Our family has spent many happy holidays there. Huron is one of the 5 Great Lakes, freshwater gems right here in the middle of a continent. Share between two neighbours, Canada and the United States, they are a resource for life and livelihood.

Inspired by this stone, I photographed it for today & I wrote this haiku. Enjoy!

POETRY--POCKET IT!

Poetry, as I have said before, is everywhere!
From when we first heard nursery rhymes as children, to learning skipping songs and memorizing stanzas for school, poetry has played a part in our lives.

Sometimes, we actually start to write our own poems.
Do you have some papers, a small notebook,
a place where you have written some words? some poems!

Other times, we discover works of legendary poets in various places: ads, blogs, websites, books, even magazines such as O. You might even find Poetry in the Movies .

This week, on Thursday, poetry will be stored in many pockets as we celebrate Poetry in Your Pocket Day, the day I mentioned in my April 1 blog.

For this day, you can make a small "green" book such as the one I described in my previous post.

Poetry Kernels!

As I thought about Poetry Month, I recalled
an amazing poem that was shared on a
popular television series, Mad Men.
I wrote about it in my other blog at
MAD about POETRY MONTH 2011!

Today, I reflected on these items plus hearing

the good news that one of my poetry chums,
Walt Wojtanik, has been interviewed by a well-known American poet, Robert Lee Brewer.

I realized, based on my experience with poetry, plus the stories of so many poets, that poetry is a varied format, almost as varied as the kernels of corn that I captured in these photos.

In my own poetry, I see varied shades in length
and themes, colour and tone.

Poetry ideas for you!

April has arrived! For me, it always brings showers, not just rain, but words, as well.
Designated as National Poetry Month in several countries, April has become the 30-day event to celebrate poetry.

There are so many ways to acknowledge the wonder of poetry.
One year, I sketched out a few ideas for expressing the joy of poetry. Then, I folded it into a small pocket-sized book--ideal for that special Poem in your Pocket day, half-way through April.

This year, I purchased a copy of the April issue for
O The Oprah Magazine. After reading it,
I shared, in a review, some of the great items
in its Special Section on Poetry.

Oprah & Poetry

Poetry has been a part of my life since childhood.
Many of you can recall favourite lines of verse,
even whole poems that were a requirement
to memorize and recite aloud to your peers.
Not so much fun for most of us; however,
there are a lot of happy "poetry" memories, too.
Song lyrics, story poems, lines of lingering drama or rhythmic words arranged in a way almost magical to hear. If you look back, can you recall some of those special poems in your life?
Think about it, this April.
Do you have a top 3 poems that you recall? I always remember The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe and Robert Frost's Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening.

CHEERS TO THE ARTS! MUSIC! JUNO AWARDS!

Great weekend!

Earth Hour on Saturday evening was a resounding success!
Cards by candle-light worked out just fine!

Attended a local theatre production of an Agatha Christie work in Fergus Ontario.
Staged by Vision Theatre Productions, it was well-attended.
Interestingly, the money raised from the performances was directed to the local Food Bank.

To me, it was just another example of how vital the Arts can be to a community. With the aid of a Trillium Grant, the small movie theatre setting has been transformed into an ideal, live theatre venue. This provides a positive contribution in so many ways:

creative drama past-time for hobbyists & local actors;
recreational entertainment activity for community members;
funds raised for a local need--the Food Bank.

Go Arts!

Speaking of the Arts, watched the Canadian Juno Awards. On the 40th anniversary of this event, so much talent was honoured by these awards! The performances of musicians were great: Arcade Fire, Sarah McLaughlin, Hedley and so many others were amazing!

Hosted by Drake, there was an ongoing Hip-Hop theme to the evening that demonstrated more creativity, humour and talent.

Musical talent was recognized on a wide scale, from Justin Bieber to Shania Twain. A special medley of hits by current musicians paid tribute to earlier musicians who put Toronto on the map for music in the 60s and 70s: Ronnie Hawkins, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell and The Band. Presenters included members of Rush, Daniel Langois, Dan Hill, Sara Harmer, and Robbie Robertson, himself.

The highlight of the evening, for many of us, was the presentation of a special Humanitarian Award to Neil Young for his work with Bridges school and Farm Aid. In his inimitable Neil Young style, the talented and creative individual shared some words that reached out to the audience, viewers and the cast of Juno Awards nominees and recipients. HARVEST!

The Juno Awards 2011 reflected a
true harvest of music
and creativity over the last 40 years.

In these days of budget cuts, the Arts,
including music, are often shunted aside.

This weekend, once again, I was glad for the Arts.

Each day, when I see the treble clef glasswork hanging in the window, I am thankful for music and craft work! I hope we will always have these creative spirits in our lives.

P.S. And, yes, this was a shout out for the Arts!

CANDLE-LIGHT FOR EARTH HOUR 2011

Tonight is the night to celebrate Earth Hour.

The plan is:

light a fire in the fireplace;
turn off the hockey game, even though Montreal is playing(!);
play cards by candle-light.

OVER-BURDENED!

March is on its way out!

After receiving a record snowfall of 26 centimetres, I can't say that I will be sad to see it go.

Even more, I am looking forward to April with its usual mixture of rain & snow & POETRY!

April is National Poetry Month in Canada, the United States and some other countries, as well.

During April, the League of Canadian Poets will post some poems by members--check on April 23!
This year's theme is Nurture/Nourriture.

NO SPRING at the Pond!

Autumn Swim!

Well, technically, it is the season of Spring!

However, when I walked up to our pond today,
I saw that it was covered by a substantial, disc of white!
No ducks or blue herons were hanging out at this amazing little pond, this afternoon. Last summer and fall, the ducks swam to their hearts' content.

Winter has not released its hold on this spot that offered a lot of skating fun this year.

Water Day was celebrated today by people but not the many mallards!

MARCH 21 2011--BIG DAY!

Well, March 21 has always been one of my favourite days--birthday, spring day, spring-time!
So far, the day has been off to a great start with birthday cards and greetings and gifts.
So much to be thankful for on this day!

Although it is cloudy, it is not raining so there is a great opportunity to go for a walk.
Of course, I will take our trusty cock-a-poo with us. He is the star of my latest Guest Post at WM Pet Connection: Guest Post- Book Your Pet .

PERENNIAL COLUMBINE BLOOMS
WILL SOON REAPPEAR!!!!

The weekend was great with a lot of rearranging and planning for the home and family. Had a delightful lunch at a local inn, Benjamin's, that has been rated with 4 out of 5 stars by TripAdvisor.ca. is located in the heart of St. Jacob's a local village that draws many tourists and play-goers all year round with its array of shops and live theatre.
The Mennonite foundations of this village are quite evident, though always evolving as the area becomes more urbanized.
Actually, I had time to read more of the latest winter-into-spring read. It is historical fiction, one of my all-time interests.

GREEN BEYOND THE 17TH!

Well it is the 17th of March, once again.

Shamrock flourished on the deck last summer!

The world seems to turn green for a day.
For me, it is a celebration of my heritage as I wrote
in my blog last year:
St. Patrick's Day--on wearin' a bit of green!

This year, I just came across a website, PlanBig.com that links this day's greetings
with an creative suggestion to continue
to think green, everyday, not just St. Patrick's Day.
Of course, at PlanBig.com, the "green" term
is used to describe
environmentally friendly actions and activities.
Although it has a focus in Australia, there is room
for bigger international applications.
Sounds like a Plan!
